Four-cylinder engine
The BMW TwinPower Turbo four-cylinder engines combine the powerful performance of a BMW engine with the BMW EfficientDynamics philosophy. This applies to combustion engines with petrol direct injection systems as well as electrically-recharged diesel engines.
All four-cylinder engines are part of BMW EfficientDynamics, the innovative technology package that consistently propels the optimisation of conventional petrol and diesel engines. At the centre of this is the BMW TwinPower Turbo technology, which combines a TwinScroll turbocharger with Valvetronic, double-Vanos and High Precision Injection in the petrol engines in the BMW 116i and 118i. The high compression ratio and the precise, electronically-controlled injections that target the spark plugs ensure good airflow and highly-efficient fuel combustion, so the engines stay economical even at high speeds.
Additional measures like the Auto Start Stop function, the gear shift indicator or the use of numerous lightweight components in the engine block increase efficiency. Among these are the ECO PRO Mode with optimised accelerator and transmission characteristics, ECO PRO tips for particularly efficient driving as well as an intelligent heating and air-conditioning strategy. The on-board computer calculates how many kilometres the ECO PRO Mode is capable of and displays these in the instrument panel as the 'bonus range'.
The result of these measures is impressive performance values, even power delivery and unparalleled running smoothness over the entire speed range, as well as markedly more efficient fuel consumption and emission values.
The diesel engines also boast rapid power development and spontaneous delivery in low rev ranges. The combination of innovative turbocharging technology with variable turbine geometry, fully-variable performance control and the newest generation of the common rail direct injection system gives the BMW TwinPower Turbo four-cylinder diesel engine in the BMW 120d an accumulated 125 kW (184 hp) and massive torque of 380 Nm. The constant, high injection pressure and further BMW EfficientDynamics measures like the 8-speed automatic transmission Steptronic with Auto Start Stop function ensure an extremely efficient average consumption of 4.6 to 4.5 l/100 km* with CO2 emissions from 122 to 119 g/km*.
All available variants are made in a lightweight aluminium design and have a maintenance-free particle filter fitted as standard. With their highly-effective fuel combustion the BMW four-cylinder diesel engines offer a previously unattained combination of performance and consumption – in line with the BMW EfficientDynamics philosophy.
Further information about the official fuel consumption and the official specific CO2 emissions for new passenger automobiles can be found in the "New Passenger Vehicle Fuel Consumption and CO2 Emission Guidelines", which are available free of charge at all sales outlets and from DAT Deutsche Automobil Treuhand GmbH, Hellmuth-Hirth-Str. 1, 73760 Ostfildern, Germany.
* The figures for fuel consumption and CO2 emissions depend on the wheel and tyre sizes selected.
