Passive Safety

An integrated package of intelligent safety measures ensures that if an accident cannot be avoided, the threat of injury will be kept to a minimum.

The occupant cell of your BMW is extremely rigid, with bodyshell components made of multi-phase steel and special reinforcements in the floorpan and doors maintaining a protective frame around the cabin in the event of an accident. At the same time, other elements of the vehicle are designed to absorb the force of the impact: the reversible deformation elements in the front and rear of the vehicle, for example, are able to absorb the force of an impact at speeds up to 15 km/h, leaving the bodyshell completely undamaged.

The moment an accident situation is detected, an entire network of additional safety elements is activated, functioning in precise coordination to ensure maximum possible protection of you and your passengers. The airbags are deployed at precisely the right moment and to the right degree relative to the nature of the accident, thanks to a system of sensors within the vehicle. The seatbelt pretensioner is activated pyrotechnically, holding occupants firmly in place, while the seatbelt force limiter and integrated seatbelt buckles ensure that the belts themselves do not cause injury.

As well as minimising the risk of injury in an accident, the passive safety system assists in getting speedy help: it automatically activates the hazard light, decouples the battery, turns on the cabin lights and unlocks all the doors. In models that include the BMW Professional navigation system, Bluetooth and ConnectedDrive Services, the system also automatically makes an emergency call, transmitting data on the location of the vehicle.
