Compound braking
The world's most powerful engines demand the world's most effective brakes. So vehicles from the BMW M range are equipped with high-performance compound brakes that bring the vehicle quickly to a halt, while always ensuring safety and stability.
In order to control the enormous accelerating power of the BMW M engines, the brakes fitted to BMW M vehicles use compound brake disks. These differ to conventional brake disks through their use of a number of different materials in the disks, each of which offers particular benefits for superb performance.
The brake cover, for example, is constructed of aluminium. The perforated, inner-vented friction ring on the grey-cast iron brake discs is connected in floating arrangement with the aluminium brake cover via cast-in stainless steel pins.
This precise combination of materials and intelligent design leads to significant weight reductions in unsprung mass (3 kg lighter than conventional systems) plus effective heat exchange, outstanding braking performance and a longer service life.
